Demystifying Death

In recent years, there’s been a troubling trend where some new –and some not so new– to funeral service industry seem to be turning the somber responsibilities of their profession into a spectacle for entertainment and social media clicks. It’s baffling to see how the serious nature of death and mourning can be reduced to mere content creation, often under the guise of “demystifying” the experience of dying. But let’s be real here: can we really expect to unravel the complexities of death in a TikTok video?

The greatest philosophers and thinkers throughout history have grappled with the mysteries of mortality, and they haven’t exactly cracked the code. So how does someone with a few years in mortuary science suddenly believe they can simplify such profound topics for clicks? It feels disingenuous at best.

Calling yourself a Mortician and dressing as a Goth does not elevate your standard in funeral service; it diminishes it. While viewers might click on your videos, when they actually need the services of a funeral director, it’s likely they won’t turn to you.

As the discussion surrounding death and dying continues to evolve, we must remember the importance of respect and genuine care within the funeral service. Let’s keep the needs of grieving families at the forefront and avoid turning this sacred duty into mere entertainment.
